Slick was only 18 months old when he suffered chronic injury to his right eye as a result of a piece of glass that had been shared from a window that had been smashed. In 1976, following a period of ten years spent living in England, Rick and his family made the decision to move to the United States of America.
When Slick and his family first arrived in the Bronx, it did not take him long to realise that he possessed a special talent. He graduated from the Fiorello H. Laguardia High School of Music & Art with a significant in visual arts after having attended that institution.

Career:
After Slick graduated from high school, he immediately started working towards his goal of being a rapper. It wasn’t long before he understood that his persona as a rapper would attract the attention of the human beatbox Doug E. Fresh. Doug E sought out Slick to be a featured artist on his 1985 single The Show and La Da Da, which went on to become a successful release and is now considered to be one of the most sampled hip-hop songs of all time.
During that period, many referred to him by the alias MS Rsku D. The tunes caught the attention of a number of labels, including Slick Records. Rick was only the third artist in the history of Def Jam to sign with the label.
The Great Adventures of Slick Rick was the first studio album that Slik Rick released, and it was released in November of 1988. Rick, an album that went on to achieve not only economic success by selling more than one million copies but also widespread acknowledgement as one of the best albums in the history of rap music. The album was awarded a platinum certification by the RIAA and had three songs that charted, namely “Children’s Story,” “Hey Young World,” and “Teenage Love.”
Slick came out with his second album not long after the release of his first. Now that Rick was making a lot of money and establishing a reputation for himself, his career came dangerously close to reaching new heights of renown. Rick’s mother, who was at the time serving in the capacity of his manager, came to the conclusion that he required some security and so decided to hire his cousin Mark Plummer as his bodyguard.
Mark coerced his cousin, Slick, into giving him jewels in exchange for a number of New York rental properties. He was dismissed by Rick. After that, Plummer gave his response to the cool and collected manner in which he threatened to kill Rick and his mother.
After a little time had passed, Rick eventually arrived home one day to find bullet holes in his front door. At that point, he made the decision that it was time to fight fire with fire. Rick got into his car and drove off in the direction of Mark. In the trunk of Rick’s car were six weapons, all of which were loaded, including two machine guns and a shotgun. When Slick at last located his cousin, he attempted to shoot him but was unsuccessful.
On July 3, 1990, Slick fired another shot, and this one struck Mark in the foot. Mark never recovered from his injury. It took the police only a minute to arrive, and as a consequence, he was detained and promptly pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted murder along with other offences including assault, use of a handgun, and criminal possession of a firearms. Even though he argued that he was only protecting himself, the judge found him guilty and gave him a sentence of ten years in jail.
On the other side, his cousin Mark was shot and killed in revenge for a crime that was unrelated to the original act. Before entering to complete his term, Slik Rick would record close to two dozen songs and release them as his second album, The Ruler’s Back. Despite the fact that the project did not achieve any significant traction, Slik Rick would enter to serve his sentence.
Behind Bars, his third studio album, was released in 1994 and was recorded entirely within the confines of his prison cell. In spite of the fact that he recorded the most of it while participating in a work-release programme, his music was ultimately unsuccessful. He was freed from prison in 1997 after serving a five-year sentence, and immediately went to work on a new record, which he later titled The Art of Storytelling and published in 1999.
The album went on to become Slick Rick’s most successful work in the music industry and featured cameo appearances by up-and-coming rappers such as Nas, Snoop Dogg, Redman, and Outkast. Slick Rick reclaimed his place at the pinnacle of the music industry in the early 2000s after reviving his career via mastery of the craft of storytelling.

Slick was finally freed after spending 17 months behind bars, but the INS wasn’t through yet. They attempted to deport Rick once more in 2006 and again in 2008, but happily, their plan was unsuccessful.
After some time had passed, Governor David Paterson of New York issued Rick a full and unconditional pardon for the attempted murder charges. Since that time, INS has stopped bothering Rick and given him his space. In addition to that, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, Future, and other artists have sampled him in their songs.
